If you are a skeptic, please note that I am including my own personal experience and testimony last and least in this book. I’m not including this last (and shortest) because experience isn’t important – it’s crucial, given the personal nature of what Jesus says in Matthew 7:23. Rather I include my own testimony last, because a testimony is best expressed in person and in relationship, and the clear majority of people who read this will not know me personally. As mentioned in the introduction, I went through a dark night of doubt for quite some time in college, and again during seminary. I did not have an experience of God nor an epiphany, nor an angelic visit that ultimately brought me out of that doubt, but rather it came slowly and undramatically as I read more and more about the resurrection of Jesus.
Carefully considering the biblical claims of resurrection and weighing all the evidence is what ended my deepest struggles with doubt. I came to realize, in a very non-emotional moment, that the evidence overwhelmingly favored the conclusion that Jesus factually died, and factually rose from the grave. Relationship and genuine encounters with the living and active God (through His Holy Spirit) happened numerous times after that moment, but God initially used a desperate study of the resurrection to open me up to His Word and His Spirit in a deeper way than before.
Perhaps that is why you are reading this book – perhaps you too are going through a dark night of doubt. If so, then I pray that this book will be a blessing and great encouragement to you. There is truth, real bedrock truth, found in the resurrection of Jesus. Seek it. Seek Him. If I can be of any help on that journey, please contact me online – all my contact information is displayed at the very end of this book. I’d love to know how this has impacted you, and how it could be better. Thank you for reading! If you are now going through hell, or if you are going through doubt…keep going!
